or not they are attending the annual gathering friday september 7th and saturday september 8th 2018 : annual gathering in edinburgh, including a guided tour of the battlefield of prestonpans (september 21st 1745) by arran johnston, and of the palace of holyrood where the council of war was held on october 30th 1745 by deborah clarke. wednesday december 5th 2018 : to commemorate the anniversary of the council of war at derby on december 5th 1745, we will hold our annual tour of gallery no 4 (the wolfson gallery) of the scottish national portrait gallery between 12:15 pm and 1 pm. commencing at the culloden visitor centre at 10:30 am, organised by the gaelic society of inverness. following the wreath laying ceremony, all members of the association in attendance are invited to join the clan donald for their dinner at 1 pm. saturday, april 20th 2019 : annual commemoration of the kennington martyrs at st george’s gardens, london, where their last mortal remains are interred. friday, june 7th 2019 – saturday, june 8th 2019 : annual gathering of the association in inverness. the gathering is exceptionally being held in june rather than september in 2019 to commemorate the tri-centenary of the battle of glen shiel (june 1719), which we are organising jointly with the association of highland clans and societies. the gathering will include a tour of the culloden battlefield on friday, with a talk on recent evidence that throws new light on the scale and events of the battle, followed by a visit on the saturday to eilean dolan castle and the glen shiel battlefield.” st george's gardens: saturday 21st april, 2018 this year we had fourteen people who came to pay their respects to those who fell during and after the jacobite risings and in particular the nine men of the manchester regiment and seven scots who are buried in unmarked graves in the gardens . we began proceedings with a brief reminder of the progress of the jacobite army to derby and how, despite the level of support expected from english and welsh jacobites being not forthcoming, about 200 men from lancashire joined the prince and were formed into the manchester regiment under the command of francis towneley. as we know carlisle fell to the duke of cumberland and the garrison was captured. most of the men buried in st george’s gardens were taken at carlisle. col francis towneley is buried in nearby old st pancras church. words of remembrance were spoken by steve lord of the 1745 association and these were added to by lester hillman of old st pancras church. floral tributes were placed on the plaque on behalf of the 1745 association by mr stanley morris, by mr charlie beattie on behalf of the white cockade society and by mr mark hayball on behalf of the clan chief's and the clan donald society of the highlands and islands. commenting mark said "i am delighted to have been invited by the 1745 association to be present on this important day and pay tribute to so many who lost their lives at culloden on 6 april 1746. we will never forget them". the occasion was also marked by members of both the royal stuart society and the stewart society. mr roddy livingstone attended and piped for the occasion, playing lament for macdonald of kinlochmoidart and lament for macdonnell of laggan . the close of the short commemoration we visited the nearby foundling museum to view william hogarth’s painting “the march of the guards to finchley” which depicts (among other things!) a column of soldiers about to march north to meet the anticipated advance
